Neighbor hears arguing, gunshots; man found dead

Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened overnight on Detroit's northwest side.

A neighbor called police early Wednesday morning after he heard arguing and then some gunshots. He told police when he looked out his window, he saw a victim lying on the sidewalk.

"According to one of the neighbors here, he heard some sort of argument around 1 o'clock. Maybe around 2, 2:15 he heard a couple shots. He hid for a second and after that, looked out the window and saw the gentlemen laying down on the street," says Detroit Police Dept. Sgt. Ray Saati. Investigators were called to the scene around 4 a.m.

Investigators are working to notify the victim's family and have not yet released his name, though they say he is in his early 20s. Police say the victim was shot in the chest from about 20 feet away.

The shooting happened near Vassar Drive and Chapel Streets, which is near Seven  Mile and Lahser roads.

Police noticed tiremarks in the street and believe the suspect sped away. They're working to get a vehicle description.

Investigators went door-to-door questioning neighbors if they heard or saw anything suspicious. If you saw or heard anything, you're asked to contact the Detroit Police Department.
