An Oak Park police officer fatally shot an ax-wielding suspect Monday night.

The incident happened in the area of Avon and Kenwood near Greenfield and Nine Mile Road.  Police say at 6:25 p.m. officers responded to a call of a man who said he was armed with a gun and an ax and was threatening to "shoot up the neighborhood."

When officers arrived at the scene, police say the man charged at officers with an ax before being shot once, fatally. It is unclear if the man had a gun.

Oak Park Public Safety Director Steve Cooper explained what happened when his officers arrived and encountered the mother of the victim.

"She was immediately brought onto the porch," said Steve Cooper, Director, Oak Park Public Safety. "As the officers immediately entered the home, they were met by the subject who actually called and made the threats. And they were faced with the situation of the suspect advancing with a hatchet."

The man is in his mid-40s. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.

The officer has been put on paid administrative leave.
