Officials to break ground on Detroit riverfront project

DETROIT (AP) -- Government and business leaders plan to gather for the groundbreaking of a large mixed-use development project on Detroit's East Riverfront.

Mayor Mike Duggan will be among the speakers on Tuesday morning at the future site of Orleans Landing, a project pegged at $65 million along Atwater Street east of the Renaissance Center. The first phase is expected to include about 270 residential units.

The project, which includes redevelopment of 25 industrial properties, has faced delays related to property cleanup. The site has required environmental investigations, demolition and removal of contaminated soils and abandoned underground storage tanks.

The development is near Milliken State Park and Harbor along the Detroit River.
