Patient in custody after stealing ambulance and leading police chase

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (FOX 2) - A 42-year-old man is in custody after he allegedly stole an ambulance and led multiple jurisdictions on a chase near the area of Groesbeck and North Avenue Saturday afternoon. 

The suspect, a psychiatric patient, was being transported from McLaren Hospital Macomb. He was then able to overpower the two EMTs and drive off in their ambulance. 

Clinton Township Police Officers pursued him. The patient eventually lost control off Schoenherr near 21 Mile Road, smashing into two patrol cars. 

Clinton Township Police say they will seek carjacking and will be eluding charges. 

FOX 2 reached out to Medstar to find out some safety tips for situations like this, but have not heard anything back.
