Police: 2 killed trying to beat Amtrak train in Wayne

Two people were killed late Wednesday night after their vehicle was hit by a train. The accident happened in Wayne at the crossing on Venoy Street just south of Michigan Avenue.

Police say the driver of a truck attempted to go through the railroad crossing, which had its safety arms down at the time. That's when the truck was hit by an Amtrak train.

The man and the woman inside the truck were killed.

"I felt for their families instantly," says Jennifer Weldon, a woman who saw the aftermath of the crash.

The area of Michigan Avenue and Venoy Street was blocked off for some time as Wayne Police and Michigan State Police investigated.

The Amtrack train was going from Chicago to Pontiac when the accident happened about 10:40 p.m. An Amtrack official says about 90 people were onboard the train, and no injuries were reported.

The train was delayed almost three hours before continuing on.
