Video: State police helicopter tracks down Lodge drag racers

Video from Michigan State Police: Two racing drivers hitting speeds of 120 to 130 mph on the Lodge were tracked down by MSP's Trooper 2 and arrested on the ground on Woodward Avenue downtown.

Two racing drivers on the Lodge were unable to escape Michigan State Police's eye in the sky in a new video released Thursday.

The backstory:

The drivers were clocked going between 120 and 130 miles per hour southbound on the freeway at about 12:30 a.m. on August 8th.

Suspects in an orange Camaro and black Mustang were tracked overhead by MSP's helicopter Trooper 2 which followed them as they raced at times in tandem, down M-10.

"We've got two vehicles, it's like they're racing, 120-plus." says the Trooper 2 pilot over the radio.

The two drivers exit at Grand River and quickly get surrounded by Michigan State Police ground units.

Dig deeper:

At Woodward Avenue and Elizabeth Street, blue MSP units close in on the two vehicles.

"It's like they're having some issues with the passengers," the pilot says. "The other units are still heading that way."

Video shows one of the passengers from the Camaro resists troopers before getting placed under control – and under arrest.

"Another example of how our Aviation Unit gives troopers an eye in the sky, allowing us to address dangerous driving while helping reduce the risk to everyone on the road," said MSP 2nd District on X, formerly Twitter.
