Snyder to sign road bills Tuesday; plan has tax, fee hikes
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder will sign a road-funding package into law on Tuesday afternoon near Lansing.
The Republican governor will be joined by GOP lawmakers along with road officials and business and labor leaders. The legislation approved last week includes a 7.3-cent gasoline tax hike and a 20 percent increase in vehicle registration fees in 2017.
Snyder will sign the bills at the Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association, a construction trade group that has long pushed for additional spending on roads and bridges. MITA is headquartered outside Lansing in Alaiedon Township.
The legislation also includes an expanded tax credit for lower- to middle-class homeowners and renters that will take effect in 2018.
Half of the permanent $1.2 billion influx in spending will come from shifting general funds to the road budget.
