CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (FOX 2) - A driver in a stolen vehicle with a baby inside made it to Chesterfield from Port Huron before crashing, authorities said.
The backstory:
A juvenile suspect stole the vehicle from the area of Pine Grove and Hancock in Port Huron just after 9 p.m. Thursday and fled westbound on I-94. According to Port Huron police, a 1-year-old was asleep in the vehicle.
Port Huron police chased the vehicle until deputies with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office jumped in the chase on I-94 near Gratiot. That chase continued to 21 Mile Road, where the suspect exited the freeway.
Authorities said the driver then crashed into another vehicle at 21 Mile and Sugarbrush roads. Multiple police agencies responded to assist, including from Chesterfield and Macomb.
The suspect was arrested, while the baby, who was uninjured, was turned over to their mother.
"Great work by deputies, officers and Central Dispatch today. When a child is involved, situations are certainly more heightened and we are all grateful the child was unharmed in this instance," St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King said.
