Target closing one of its stores in Sterling Heights

One of the Target locations is Sterling Heights is set to close, city officials announced this week.

The Target located at 35700 Van Dyke, located just north of 15 Mile Road, will be closing effective June 1.

The closure will affect 136 employees, but corporate reports it's offering other positions to all of them. Corporate reports it expects 95 percent of the employees will take a job at a new store. A reason for the closure wasn't given.

The land where Target sits at 15 Mile will be ripe for redevelopment. The site is currently home to a number of development projects, including the new Christian Financial Credit Union headquarters along with two new hotels and multiple commercial developments that are underway.

"The City is disappointed in the Target closure - but has no doubt the space will be quickly redeveloped given the amount of construction activity  currently taking place throughout the City but especially in the area of 15 Mile and Van Dyke," said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor. "I'm very relieved to hear the employees will be offered alternate employment with Target and no one will be left without a job."

The City of Sterling Heights is also home to another Target store on Metro Parkway, just off Dequindre Road, which will remain open.
