Used fireworks in garbage spark West Bloomfield house fire

A fire ripped through a family home in West Bloomfield after a spent firework in the garbage can ignited a fire that spread into the attic overnight.

The incident happened after a family of three adults and a teen spent an evening lighting fireworks for the Fourth of July at their home on Greer Road in West Bloomfield.

West Bloomfield Fire Marshall Bryon Turnquist says the family went inside for the evening and then they heard a pop. When they went to investigate what that noise was, they saw the garbage can on fire.

The fire quickly spread in the back of the house to the vinyl siding, and then into the attic. The homeowners had fire extinguishers and used them to try to put the fire out.

However, the homeowner did not first call the fire department. The fire marshal always recommends that you soak down the fireworks before you put them in the garbage can.

No one was injured in the incident, but there is extensive damage to the home that will take several months to repair.
