VIDEO: Suspected drunk driver runs from police on St. Patrick's Day, crashes into utility pole

A man in Pontiac is accused of driving drunk and leading police on a chase that ended when he crashed into a utility pole on St. Patrick's Day.

Deputies say they were on patrol on St. Patrick's Day around 8:30 p.m. when they spotted a Ford pickup at Elizabeth Lake Rd. and Telegraph speeding. The officer tried to pull the truck over but instead, the driver refused to stop.

The deputy followed for a short distance that ended just north of Elizabeth Lake Rd. on Johnson St. when the driver collided with a utility pole.

When officers got to the car, they reported open containers and the driver told them he had been drinking. He was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for minor injuries.

He was released pending toxicology reports and a warrant will be prepared for operating while intoxicated and fleeing & eluding police.

The man, a 38-year-old from West Bloomfield, has not been identified.
