Vigil held for 24-year-old killed while celebrating birthday

DETROIT - A community comes together to remember a young man, killed in the prime of his life.

Friends and family of 24-year-old Mylin Jenkins gathered tonight to share their memories and heartache.

“Me never being able to talk to my brother again is the most devastating thing I'm ever going to have to endure,” said Nygeria Ligon, the victim’s sister.

Those who knew Mylin best say he was always the life of the party.

“His style. To be so young he had wonderful style. Always smiling, I've never seen this guy, I've never seen him angry,” said Timothy Clark, a friend of Mylin’s.

Mylin and his friends were celebrating his 24th birthday last Monday, when he was shot and killed in his car. This happened outside of a friend's house on Steel Street.

"I just want them to find out why my brother was murdered because he did not deserve to be killed. He did not deserve to lose his life,” said Ligon.

The suspect, 17-year-old Devin Sims, was a friend of the group. He was arrested shortly after a standoff with police, the same day Mylin was killed.

"I still really can't believe he's gone yet. It's crazy, like he was literally my everything,” said Anthony Ousley, a friend of Mylin.

Now, Mylin is remembered for his confidence. Openly gay, his friends and family say he inspired others to be true to themselves.

"Everything he wanted to do he did. He was in school, he was working a full-time job, two jobs. He actually just got hired into a third one. He wanted to be a dentist,” said Ligon.

“He was a very energetic person. He was such a great person. Mylin was definitely a different type of spirit,” said Ousley.
