Western Michigan calls on 'Rocky' for scholarship surprise
Football season is upon us. From Ann Arbor to Kalamazoo, football is back in the state of Michigan as high schools and colleges prepare for the coming season. This year, Western Michigan has a new scholarship players who has put in the work for the honor.
Head Coach PJ Fleck surprised linebacker Kasey Carson with the scholarship during Saturday's practice. But this was no simple thing. He employed none other than the most famous underdog in Hollywood: Rocky.
Carson, a redshirt sophomore, walked on the WMU in 2013. He's undersized at 5'11" and 208 lbs for a linebacker but fleck said he "exemplifies everything Western Michigan football is all about."
Here's how it happened: Fleck entered the field in full pads and helmet and challenged his linebacker to an Oklahoma Drill at the goal line. Carson had to stop Fleck from getting to the goal line and if he did - the team would be rewarded with no evening meeting.
Carson won the drill and then came the moment. Fleck directed his entire team to the video boards throughout Waldo Stadium. That's where Sylvester Stallone appeared and gave the good news that the Battle Creek walk-on was going to WMU on an athletic scholarship.
From there, the entire team mobbed Carson as Stallone and former WMU player Alan Gores delivered the big news.
