Winter weather advisories issued for SE Michigan; 3-7 inches of snow possible

(WJBK) - Last week's snow is gone, time to replace it with more.

Winter makes a return on Tuesday with several inches of snow expected for SE Michigan with projections between 4 and 7 inches.

Winter storm warning for Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair and Lapeer counties runs until 11 p.m. Winter Weather Advisory for Wayne, Washtenaw, Monroe and Lenawee runs from 1 p.m. until 11 pm.

After Sunday's record high, we reached into the upper 40s on Monday with a mix of sun and clouds but it was blustery. On Tuesday, that changes.

The snow starts around sunrise and will persist pretty much all day. We'll see periods of snow during throughout the day with most accumulation happening up in the thumb.

The setup:

Tthe storm began brewing over South Dakota. The low pressure will emerge from the northern Rocky Mountains and when it does, it's bringing a whole lot winter moisture with it.

The band of snow was over northern Iowa and southern Wisconsin before it to cut across Lake Michigan. For the daytime hours of Tuesday, snow will be over southern Michigan but it doesn't get intense until Tuesday evening.

An area of light snow is lifting south to north this morning and may put down about an inch or two through the commute. Once that clears your area, you may not see the snow return until the afternoon. This is the "main event," so to speak, and most snow will fall 4 p.m. and beyond.

It may start as a bit of sleet Detroit south early in the afternoon before changing back to snow. The snow should be steady/heavy through the evening commute and last through the first part of the night before tapering off.

By the time you wake up on Wednesday morning, we could have several more inches with between 4 and 7 total inches of snow on the ground, depending on where you live. Snow totals look to range from 3-4" south of Detroit, and 4-7" Detroit and north.

Wednesday morning, that storm finally leaves southeast Michigan. In its place, we get cold with highs staying below 30 and another chance of snow coming over the weekend.
