On Wednesday, the sight many saw in the area was rising water levels and residents were trekking through just to get home. FOX 2 saw the damage that was done to one family’s garage as a result of all the flooding from the Clinton River. But the big question now is: why does this happen, and for so many years?

State crews working to prevent Cheboygan dam failure
The current measurement is the water is 5.04 inches from the top according to the 4 p.m. update, having raised 0.24 inches since this morning's measurement. Governor Gretchen Whitmer helped give an update alongside officials calling the overtop concerns a severe moment, but crediting the crews working around the clock. "My administration will continue to monitor the situation and work with local communities to get them the resources that they need," Whitmer said. "We are in crisis mode now. Recovery mode will take additional work and we will continue these partnerships." During the press conference one of the officials said there are there are three structures identified as at-risk, in the inundation zone including a condominium complex and two of them businesses with everyone involved being notified.

Bodycam video shows officers taking precautions, guns drawn, screaming for Smith to show his hands multiple times. Officers in the video also warned each other that it looked like Smith was "reaching."

Syverud has been diagnosed with a form of brain cancer and is undergoing treatment. As a result the regents announced current president Domenico Grasso will continue to serve as president until the next president is found. The board is planning to re-start the search process to find a new president. Syverud said he was diagnosed last week.

Melvindale police say on Friday, April 3, officers assisted the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) with the arrest of 52-year-old Richard Lee Smith, who has a felony parole absconder warrant. An investigator from MDOC told police that Smith had violent tendencies. Authorities say they had been tracking a stolen vehicle that Smith allegedly drove throughout the Downriver area when the Melvindale police were given a FLOCK Camera stolen vehicle alert. Police say they pulled over the vehicle but when a sergeant approached, they drove off.
