"Ruby" Musical to premiere at Detroit's Music Hall, spotlighting untold Black stories to kick-off Black History Month – Feb. 7-9
Real Times Media, in collaboration with the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, is set to host the Detroit premiere of Ruby: The Musical, a theatrical production that amplifies an untold story of resilience, racism, and justice. The musical, produced by the acclaimed Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, will debut Feb. 7–9, 2025, at Detroit’s Music Hall, located at 350 Madison St. in Detroit, coinciding with Black History Month. Ruby recounts the true story of Ruby McCollum, a prominent Black woman in 1952 Florida who stood trial for murdering a white doctor. Through her narrative, the musical reveals the deeply entrenched racial and gender injustices of the Jim Crow South. The story captivated the nation, with coverage by famed writer Zora Neale Hurston for the Pittsburgh Courier. Now, this pivotal piece of American history is brought to life through the lens of powerful music, original compositions, and a cast of 20 dynamic performers. “Bringing Ruby to Detroit is a continuation of our mission to highlight critical, often-overlooked Black stories,” said Hiram Jackson, chief executive officer of Real Times Media and publisher of the Michigan Chronicle. “After witnessing the transformative impact of this production in Sarasota, Fla. we knew its message belonged here, in Detroit, during Black History Month—a time dedicated to honoring the legacy and contributions of Black Americans.” Directed by Nate Jacobs, founder and artistic director of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, Ruby blends original songs and heartfelt performances to explore themes of systemic racism, sexual violence, and the fight for dignity. Real Times Media’s partnership with the Music Hall shows the shared commitment to presenting stories that resonate deeply with Detroit’s rich cultural heritage and history of social activism. “Ruby McCollum’s story is a poignant reminder of the struggles Black women have faced and continue to overcome,” said Jacobs. “This production is more than theater—it’s an opportunity to give Ruby her rightful voice and educate audiences about an essential chapter in our nation’s past.” The Detroit performances will offer audiences an immersive experience, celebrating Black artistry while confronting the stark realities of America’s history. With its roots in investigative journalism and social justice, Ruby also serves as a reminder of the vital role Black media has played in uncovering truths and inspiring change. Tickets for Ruby: The Musical can be purchased on the Ticketmaster website.
