Severe storms overnight created quite the headache for residents in Utica, leading to devastating flooding that could get worse as more rain is on the way.

Syverud has been diagnosed with a form of brain cancer and is undergoing treatment. As a result the regents announced current president Domenico Grasso will continue to serve as president until the next president is found. The board is planning to re-start the search process to find a new president. Syverud said he was diagnosed last week.

As of 4 p.m. the water has gone down slightly at 6.84 inches below the top. At the Cheboygan dam, the Michigan DNR and other crews are working around the clock to make sure the water is flowing. The area has been packed with supersacks or large sandbags, while large pumps were going. The DNR said around noon that the water was fluctuating. It rises and falls, so the levels will change, meaning no need to panic.

FOX 2 spoke to a resident who was kind enough to show us the damage done to his garage as a result of the flooding. He’s dealing with damaged drywall and having to move everything that was once stored there into another room.

A Subway at Outer Drive and Dix experienced severe damage. Early Wednesday, the parking lot was littered with bricks and insulation, while part of the building had a hole in the top. Other reports of damage include multiple trees down in Garden City, Dearborn, and Wayne.

Melvindale police say on Friday, April 3, officers assisted the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) with the arrest of 52-year-old Richard Lee Smith, who has a felony parole absconder warrant.  An investigator from MDOC told police that Smith had violent tendencies. Authorities say they had been tracking a stolen vehicle that Smith allegedly drove throughout the Downriver area when the Melvindale police were given a FLOCK Camera stolen vehicle alert. Police say they pulled over the vehicle but when a sergeant approached, they drove off.
