5 injured including 3 firefighters in massive apartment blaze

DETROIT - Five people were injured in a massive apartment fire on Detroit's west side near Rouge Park Tuesday.

Three firefighters and two residents were injured from the three-alarm fire, which started at about 2:30 p.m. in the Grayton Park Apartments'  third floor unit.

During the process of knocking down the flames, part of the roof collapsed, pinning a firefighter inside. He suffered burns to his face. Two other firefighters were also in the room with him when the roof collapsed and were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

Two people living in the apartment were also hurt, one lady had burns to her face and lived in the unit that the fire was believed to have started. The second resident was treated for smoke inhalation.

There are 38 families living in the complex and are looking for a new home. A local church, Brightmoor United Methodist us offering help to those left homeless by the fire.

The cause is suspected to be from somebody attempting to kill bed bugs with fire.

"We heard that at the scene," said a Detroit firefighter. "We still have that under investigation, arson (is also) under investigation."

FOX 2: Obviously never a good idea to try and kill bed bugs with fire.

"Never a good idea," the firefighter said. "Because the fire can do what it did here, spread to other parts of the building,"

The fire happened on the first day of new Fire Commissioner Eric Jones was named to the position. He had held the interim label.

Jones was at the hospital checking the status of those injured from the blaze. The conditions of those injured are unknown.
