Detroit police update barricaded suspect situation
A man suffering mental crisis is in a standoff with police right now on the city's west side.
DETROIT (FOX 2) - The barricaded standoff with a man suffering a mental crisis ended in his arrest at about 7 p.m. Thursday.
A standoff with police played out on the west side of Detroit near Fenkell and Greenfield for about five hours.
Detroit Police Deputy Chief Arnold Williams said the man was reportedly chasing children with a knife at 1:30 p.m. at Prest and Chalfonte streets.
DPD released a statement saying: "Please be advised the 2nd Precinct Barricaded incident has come to a resolution. The individual involved has been taken into protective custody and transported to a local hospital for Mental Health evaluation."
DPD and its mental health responders arrived and were trying to resolve the situation peacefully.
Detroit police had been called to the residence in the past for similar reasons and Williams said they were concerned that he is a threat to the community.
Some non-lethal weapons were used to convince the man to surrender but failed, he said.
"We did deploy a couple less than lethal options some pepper balls, and what we call a rubber ball that was fired at his side," he said. "None of those made him surrender."
Police recovered two knives from the man earlier in the standoff but say he had more in the home, and they were unclear if there are other weapons inside as well.
