Broken water main causing icy mess in southwest Detroit

Crews are working to fix a huge water main break on Detroit's southwest side that's quickly turning into an icy mess.

The water main break happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday on Buchanan Street between W. Grand Boulevard and 23rd Street.

A representative from the Great Lakes Water Authority said in a statement that the break happened on a 30-inch transmission main which, due to the size, falls under the jurisdiction of the GLWA. Both the GLWA and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department have crews on site, though.

Also, since the water main break was so large, approximately 40 neighbors on Buchanan Street will be without water starting later on Thursday. The GLWA says it will hand out bottled water to those homes.

The GLWA says the water main break could be repaired as early as Friday.
