An armed bank robbery suspect who was barricaded in Canton has been taken into custody.

Three hostages were inside the Citizens Bank on N. Canton Center Road near Cherry Hill and were released without incident. The standoff began at 3:45 p.m. Thursday with the man who was armed with a gun.

Police said witnesses said the suspect entered the bank with a handgun and announced a robbery.

Police negotiators were able to get the suspect to release two people from inside at about 6:30. The third hostage was released shortly before the man was arrested about an hour later.

None of the hostages were injured. The suspect surrendered peacefully.

Multiple officers and vehicles swarmed the area with help from Wayne County Sheriffs and SWAT.

"Members of the Western Wayne County Special Operations Team along with the FBI, assisted in negotiating with the suspect," said Joshua Meier, Canton director of public safety.

Resident Chris Aegis recorded some of the negotiations on his phone - "Let the hostages out of the back, we can resolve this," the officer says over a bullhorn. It was their work that helped lead to a peaceful resolution.

Canton police had requested residents not contact them unless in case of emergency during the standoff, while traffic was diverted around the scene.
