City of Ferndale offering 12 weeks paid time off for new parents

FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) - The City of Ferndale announced Tuesday its new parental leave policy for city employees. Those employees now get 12 weeks' paid time off for maternity, paternity and adoption care.

The city says the research shows that paid parental leave is not only good for employees, but for employers and the people they serve as well. Strong parental leave policies reduce turnover and ensure that employees are physically and emotionally ready when they return to work.

"Ferndale is known for its acceptance and promotion of diversity," Ferndale City Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem Melanie Piana said in a news release. "The new paid parental leave policy contributes to closing the gender wage gap and provides a flexible, supportive environment for employees with families."
