'He's got a gun!': Dashcam video shows Washtenaw County deputy-involved shooting that killed unarmed driver

Authorities in Washtenaw County released dashcam footage of a deputy-involved shooting earlier this month that left an unarmed driver dead after multiple deputies opened fire on his vehicle.

This video showed a chase that went on for more than 10 minutes before the driver, who deputies believed was armed, crashed.

The backstory:

Early Jan. 6, Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies were called about an assault in Ypsilanti Township. According to the update, after receiving a 911 call about the assault, the suspect's vehicle was spotted in the area without lights.

During a press conference Thursday, 911 calls were played from both a driver who saw a van driving recklessly and a man who said a person in a van threatened his wife with what he believed was a handgun. The circumstances of this encounter are unknown.

Deputies responding to the calls spotted the van and tried to stop the driver, but he fled. A chase ensued before he crashed into a sheriff's office vehicle on Prospect near Michigan. The crash caused the van to overturn, and deputies were heard yelling at the driver to show his hands.

As deputies approached the van, a deputy was heard yelling, "He's got a gun!" before a volley of gunfire as multiple deputies fired at the van. After the shooting, a deputy was heard saying that the man was armed with a shotgun.

Sheriff Alyshia Dyer said the van was searched by Michigan State Police, who discovered there were no firearms in the vehicle. She declined to comment further on the shooting.

What's next:

After the shooting, the four deputies involved were placed on leave pending a Michigan State Police investigation.

They remain on leave while the investigation is conducted.
