Deadly wrong-way crash shuts down SB I-75

A deadly crash shut down the southbound lanes of I-75 for nearly six hours overnight at the Davison. The crash started with a police chase.

Just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, Hamtramck police were on a traffic stop when the driver continued to get away from officers. During the chase, the suspect tried hit a second police cruiser but the cruiser swerved out of the way.

The suspect then drove onto southbound I-75 going the wrong way. Police called off the chase.

But shortly after, police say the driver crashed into another vehicle which caused an explosion.

Michigan State Police says one person was killed in the crash, but it is unknown at this time if the victim was the wrong-way driver or someone in the other car involved.

MSP is investigating the fatality, and Hamtramck police is continuing to investigate the traffic stop and chase.
