Detroit Navy Week is kicking off with a celebration at Campus Martius.

The first event is Monday evening at the downtown park, with USS Detroit Deputy Commander Rear Admiral John Joliffe and the Navy band on hand. Another event is Tuesday at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak and Navy members will be recognized at Wednesday's Detroit Tigers game.

The week culminates with the Thunder Over Michigan Air Show on Saturday and Sunday featuring the Blue Angels at Willow Run Airport. Organizers say the week helps inform people about the Navy -- as well as give the Navy a taste of the Detroit area.

The warship USS Detroit is being commissioned into the Navy's fleet in 2016. Its home port is expected to be in San Diego.
