Detroit officer in Vice President's motorcade injured in accident

DETROIT (WJBK) - A Detroit police officer who was part of the Vice Presidential motorcade was in an accident in Detroit, according to Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody.

The accident happened at the intersection of Medburry and Mt. Elliot, which is approximately two miles away from the the Detroit Department of Transportation headquarters.

The officer injured was taken to a nearby hospital. He was alert and communicating, according to Woody. Police believe the cause of the accident was 'operator error.'

Joe Biden is in Detroit to discuss public transit at DDOT headquarters in downtown Detroit. Their remarks were scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., but began shortly after 3 p.m. after the accident.

According to officials, the motorcycle officer was the lead vehicle in the motorcade and hit a slick spot. He dumped his motorcycle and was taken to a nearby hospital. 

Police say the officer is listed in stable condition.
