Teen shot by her 13-year-old brother in Detroit
The investigation into a 15-year-old girl's shooting continues with police revealing it was her brother that fired the gun.
DETROIT (FOX 2) - A 15-year-old girl was shot by her 13-year-old brother at a Detroit park Wednesday, police said during a case update Friday.
Police said the shooting happened when the siblings went to the park for a fight.
The backstory:
Police Capt. John Stewart said the teens went to a park in the 19000 block of Schoenherr near Eight Mile to fight with another girl Wednesday evening. During that fight, the 13-year-old pulled out a gun and fired a shot, accidentally hitting his sister in the arm.
After the shooting, a male was located near the scene with a handgun that matched the description of the one used in the shooting. However, police determined he was not the shooter. The 13-year-old suspected shooter was arrested Thursday and will face charges, Stewart said.
"The fact that a child that young is not only able to arm themselves, but has the willingness to pull it out at a park and fire a shot, it should be troubling to anybody," Stewart said.
Dig deeper:
Though it isn't clear where the teen got the gun from, Stewart said parents need to start holding their children responsible.
"When it comes down to it, the time for sleep at the wheel parenting needs to stop," he said. "We really need to be more accountable for holding children responsible."
Stewart noted that both children live in the same home, and the girl has a long criminal history that includes assault and gun possession. He said she recently got out of the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility.
"There's been multiple chances for those responsible for this young lady to look up and see, 'hey, she may need some redirection on her path, she may need some trajectory adjustment," Stewart said.
