Detroit police shoot suspect on west side

Authorities say a man has been shot and wounded by Detroit police who were investigating an alleged assault.

The armed 45-year-old suspect go into a confrontation with the officers before being hit and is currently hospitalized in critical condition, police said Wednesday night. No officers were injured in the shooting.

The incident happened in the 14900 block of Tireman at Terry Street at about 8 p.m., just east of Greenfield, according to police.

"Basically our officer had a police run on a man with a weapon,  we know there was an exchange of gunfire," said Capt. John Serda of the Second Precinct.

Police were responding to an assault of a 26- and 55-year-old. While responding to the scene, officers encountered the suspect.

The suspect was shot in an alley and the weapon was recovered by investigators, police said.
