Detroit police teams up with DMC to get healthier

It can be a demanding job, keeping the city safe around the clock. Today, the men and women of the Detroit police department are getting time to take care of their own.

A new plan is being unveiled to improve the health and fitness of Detroit Police officers; we'll show you as they go through these screenings.

"Let's handcuff obesity,” said DPD Chief James Craig.

Dancing and yoga inside Detroit police headquarters as Chief James Craig, together with the Detroit Medical Center, announce a new effort to fix a serious issue.

“A step in the right direction, the first stage as I like to call it to get officers to reduce their weight, those who want too, then phase two which is the real fitness part and the sustainability of the weight loss,” said Chief James Craig.

Detroit police officers, who have passed through the rigorous police academy, are currently not required to face any additional health screenings or fitness tests in their careers, leaving some officers unhealthy and overweight.

Chief Craig hopes a weight loss challenge for the department will encourage officers to get fit in their own time.

Officers are being screened for blood pressure, body mass index and blood sugar.

Hundreds more of Detroit's finest volunteered and lined up for tests.

Chief Craig also announced every precinct will now be getting a gym.
