Detroit-Windsor tunnel to close weeknights this fall for renovations
(WJBK) - The Detroit-Windsor tunnel will be closed for renovations every weeknight this fall.
Authorities say this is the final phase of the $21.6 million renovation project. The renovations have included masonry and electrical work.
The tunnel will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, with occasional weekend closures. These closures will take place between November and May, and more specific dates will be announced in October. Authorities say the tunnel will be open on holidays.
Authorities say the weeknight closures will cause the least disruption for the 12,000 people that use the crossing.
The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is the only international, vehicular, subaqueous border crossing in the world. It has been recognized as one of the great engineering wonders of the world and is one of the most important border crossings between the United States and Canada. Located between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, connecting the U.S. interstates to Ontario’s Highway 401, it is one of the fastest links between the two countries.
The renovations are scheduled for completion in June 2018.
