Distracted driver rear-ends Oakland County deputy

(WJBK) - The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is reminding all drivers to put the phone down when driving after a deputy was rear-ended by a distracted driver.

The Sheriff's Office says a teenaged driver was distracted by his cell phone when he rear-ended a deputy on M-15 just north of Seymour Lake Road around 7:00 Monday morning. The deputy was stopped and about to turn onto Long Lake Drive when he was hit.

The deputy was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries to his shoulder and leg. He was later diagnosed with concussion and will miss the next two to three weeks of work.

The driver of the other car was identified as a 17-year-old resident of Brandon Township. According to the sheriff's office, he was distracted by his cell phone when the accident happened.

The teenager was not hurt and is being ticketed for failure to stop.

The deputy is a 29-year-old, 3-year veteran of the sheriff's office.
