Events at Charles H. Wright musem for new film 'Detroit'

DETROIT (WJBK) - As Detroit looks back on the 50th anniversary of the summer of 1967, anticipation is also building for a new film profiling the event.

The cast and crew are in town for the world premier of the new film 'Detroit.' It premiers Tuesday at the Fox Theatre. Ahead of the premiere, they've been taking part in several events around town.

Some castmates volunteered at Gleaners Monday, and others helped celebrate Detroit's 316th birthday by handing out free coneys and water ices. Monday night, Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow spoke at an event at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

'Detroit' tells the story of the Algiers Motel incident, in which three black teens were murdered by racist police during the riot.

The movie opens in select cities this weekend. It will play at the Bel Air Luxury Cinema in Detroit and the AMC Star John R 15 in Madison Heights on July 28. It will open in theaters nationwide on August 4.
