Family of woman killed allegedly trying to run down police, want answers

She was shot dead by police after allegedly trying to run officers over with her car.

Dearborn police are waiting for an outside investigation by Michigan State Police before commenting. Outside the Dearborn Police department. a family seeks answers.

"On Jan. 27 something terrible happened," said activist Malik Shabazz.

That was the day 31-year-old Janet Wilson was killed by a Dearborn police officer - a topic that brings forth raw emotion from her family.

Wilson was shot during a police chase where one officer was said to have sustained minor injuries. The matter is being investigated by state police, which is hardly comforting to the family in grief.

"The people who are supposed to protect you, gun you down," said Cassie Bass, Janet's niece. "Who do you turn to, at that point."

The family says although Wilson suffered from mental illness she was harmless.

"She had a chauffeurs license and driver’s license," said Talia Bass, a relative. "No criminal background."

They argue she was unarmed and killed by use of excessive force.

"An injustice for one is an injustice for all," said Bass.

Michigan State Police say the three ton car she was driving could be considered a weapon.

MSP expects to have its investigation wrapped up and in the hands of the prosecutor in days.

"If I was a murderer, I would be behind bars underneath the jail," Cassie Bass said. "Why is he out here?"

Meanwhile the family is asking for help both for funeral expenses as well, establishing a GoFundMe account called Justice for Janet as the search for the truth continues.

"We also want them to call us, we want eyes and ears," Shabazz said. "We want justice and a change in policy here and everywhere."
