Federal judge extends stay on Iraqis arrested in Detroit for another 14 days
(WJBK) - A US District judge has again extended the stay on Iraqis who have been or will be arrested by the Detroit Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office.
Detroit federal Judge Mark Goldsmith issued the order Thursday night. A previous stay had been issued June 26 and would have expired July 10. The new order will last until July 24.
In the order, it reads that good cause is required for extending the stay due to the complexity of the issue involved.
In his previous order he wrote “The substantial allegations made here are the detainees face extreme, grave consequences: death, persecution and torture."
His order will temporarily halt deportations of more than one thousand Iraqi immigrants across the U.S. who face persecution, torture or death -- if they are sent back to Iraq.
