Funding cut for Louisville nursing home after investigation

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Federal officials have announced plans to cut off funding for a Louisville nursing home.

The Courier-Journal (http://cjky.it/1M5kLTE ) reports that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced Friday that it is terminating federal funds to pay for resident care at the Hurstbourne Care Center at Stony Brook.

Officials with the state Cabinet for Health and Family Services, who conducted an investigation, cited filthy, unsanitary and dangerous conditions at the 125-person facility.

Their report detailed several problems, including insect infestations, unattended injuries and chronic staff shortages.

The cabinet's inspector general Maryellen Mynear says it's not known whether the nursing home will remain open.

Jennifer Tapp, a spokeswoman for Consulate Health Care, a Florida-based company that operates Hurstbourne Care, released a statement saying they are aware of the issues raised.
