Gunman in transgender woman shooting gets 32-50 years

DETROIT (WJBK) - A gunman was sentenced Tuesday to up to 50 years in prison for shooting a transgender woman in Detroit back in November.

Charles Brown, 21, was sentenced to 32 to 50 years in prison after prosecutors say he robbed the 36-year-old woman, named Chocolate, on Woodward Avenue and then shot her in the back with a .22 rifle as she fled, nearly killing her.

His accomplice, 19-year-old Jujuan Williams, accepted a plea deal and was sentenced February 7 to 10 to 30 years in prison for his role in the crime. 

Police say Brown and Williams pulled up as Chocolate was walking down Woodward near Worcester around 1:50 a.m. Nov. 17, 2017. They told her to drop everything and despite following directions, Brown fired five shots at her. She was hit three times.

Officers were able to track the suspects down and engaged in a chase, which ended when the suspects' vehicle jumped a curb. Police were able to arrest Williams at that time, but Brown escaped on foot. He was caught a short time later.

Brown was charged with intent to commit murder, assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, armed robbery resulting in serious injury, armed robbery, fleeing and eluding, use of a firearm in connection with a felony, felon in possession of a firearm, and being a habitual offender - second offense.
