Heavy rains cause flooding on some Detroit-area freeways

Heavy rains caused flooding on some Detroit-area freeways, forcing officials to close portions of interstates 696 and 94.

I-696 was closed on both directions early Friday in Warren and water over the roadway closed I-94 in Harper Woods. Some street flooding also was reported in suburban Detroit.

On Thursday night, the Lansing State Journal reports Adado Riverfront Park was briefly evacuated as thunderstorms moved through during Tim McGraw's Common Ground Music Festival. Officials say the crowd was welcomed back about 20 minutes later.

In the Midland area, storms knocked out power to about 10,000 utility customers. The Midland Daily News reports more than half got power back by early Friday.

In western Michigan, street flooding Thursday night hit the Grand Rapids area. A few thousand power outages were reported.

MDOT reminds drivers to never drive through standing water, as objects may be hidden underneath in the roadway or the road's condition may be bad.
