Local church has big turnout for Lent meals
REDFORD, Mich. (WJBK) - Every Friday throughout Lent the St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church's gymnasium in Redford is packed full of people all looking for the same thing -- some good fish.
Between 4 and 7 p.m. Fridays, the staff cooks, serves and sells more than a thousand dinners each week. Meals include shrimp, baked cod, deep-fried cod, hush puppies, mac'n'cheese, baked potatoes, rice pilaf and pizza, for $9 per plate.
"Our youth group is getting paid to work there, the ladies of St. Robert's are working there (and) they're getting paid," said volunteer Jim Vote.
The church serves carry out and added a drive-thru last year. Traffic was backed up to West Chicago and Inkster roads on Friday evening.
