Man accused of choking a coffee shop barista, leaving her unconscious

A 19-year-old Whitmore Lake man is in jail and facing charges after allegedly choking a coffee shop barista, causing her to pass out.

Zachary Campbell is accused of strangling the woman unconscious at Peaberry Bean & Beats in Whitmore Lake. Whitmore Lake is about 12 miles north of Ann Arbor.

The barista, a 22-year-old woman from Ann Arbor, told police she was strangled 30 minutes before they arrived and had been unconscious until she woke up and reported what happened.

Northfield Township police took Campbell into custody shortly after.

Police haven't elaborated on what happened, so the motive behind the alleged strangulation isn't known right now. Police haven't said if the suspect and victim may have known each other.

Campbell has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder and Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder.

He's being held at the Washtenaw County Jail on an $80,000 bond.
