(WJBK) - Detroit Police say they have found the mom of the 3-year-old boy whose body was found decomposing in a Detroit apartment Wednesday.
According to Detroit Public Information, the mom of the boy was located in a hospital's psychiatric care and is not in police custody at this time. Police say when she is released from the hospital, police will be notified so they can take her into custody, if necessary.
The medical examiner is performing an autopsy on the young boy, who has not been identified.
The boy was found just before 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Madison Estates apartments in Detroit by a maintenance man who smelled an odor coming from an apartment. Once inside, he found the boy's partially decomposing body.
It's unknown how long the boy had been dead and left in the apartment but we do know Detroit police had been called to the apartment as recently as May 16 to do a welfare check on the child.
Detroit Police Department's Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt says this is the second time the mother has been in a crisis center recently. The father of the child is incarcerated, Dolunt also said.
