Mother believes Detroit officers used excessive force in police-involved shooting

Body cam footage has been released of an officer-involved shooting that took place in December 2024.

What they're saying:

Officers with the Special Operations Unit were on patrol on St. Mary's, not far from Seven Mile, around 11:40 p.m. Dec. 11. 2024, when they spotted a car blocking a sidewalk, according to Detroit Police Capt. Shaun Dunning.

They say as they went up to the vehicle, their commands were ignored by the two men in the vehicle. The car began to maneuver towards the officers before shots were fired.

What we know:

The mother of now 19-year-old Raymonte Adams, who was one of the people inside the vehicle, was also speaking about the incident, saying police used excessive force.

"He had just graduated, 24, from Belleville High School. He attended a football academy in Florida. He was only here because of the break," she said.

In body cam footage, three officers can be heard yelling at the pair in the car. Officers are heard telling them to put their hands up.

"You gonna die," one officer is heard saying.

"They were yelling that they were going to kill my son, they were yelling that he was going to die tonight," the mother said.

Officials say that multiple attempts were made to get the men out of the vehicle. They say the scout car was maneuvering in front of the vehicle with emergency lights activated.

Those commands were allegedly still not heard.

"You decided to create a situation," said the mother. "The officer placed himself in front of the vehicle as if he wanted to try to stop it on his own."

Amid the chaos of officers yelling, it is difficult to make out who is saying what, but one officer can be heard saying, "I'm gonna (expletive) shoot you," before Officer A fired multiple shots through the windshield.

The driver, who was struck in the chest, then drove forward, hitting and dragging Officer A. Another officer, identified as Officer B, fired shots at the back of the vehicle.

The 18-year-old driver continued fleeing before getting out of the car a few blocks away and calling 911.

Officers arrived at the scene and tended to his injuries before taking him to a hospital, where he was treated and released. The passenger who also fled later turned himself into police.

Raymonte was shot several times, and his mom says he is recovering, but believes the situation could have been avoided.

Police say Raymonte’s passenger was released pending further investigation.
