MSP stepping up Detroit freeway patrols after 3 shootings minutes apart

Michigan State Police are increasing patrols on Detroit freeways after three separate shootings early Thursday morning just minutes apart.

"It would be tight to make it to all three but the possibility is there to make it and the one thing that really concerned us is that two of the three victims reported a gray boxy type car," said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw.

One of the freeway shootings was on I-94 near Gratiot on Detroit's eastside. The driver was hit in the knee with a bullet. The other two were on the city's eastside: I-96 at Livernois and I-96 at Davison, bullets hit cars at both locations. However, they did not hit the drivers.

Shaw says bullets recovered at a few of the scenes will be compared to see if they came from the same source.

"We're still looking for anybody who witnessed something," Shaw said.

While the three freeway shooting has many people concerned, Shaw says this is a minimal incident as far as what they see on Michigan freeways - and they should be more concerned about crashes.
