Nearly naked man crashes Jeep through home, runs from scene

A teenager was nearly killed late Wednesday night when a car came crashing through the front of the house and right into the kitchen.

It was just before midnight Wednesday when police said a 36-year-old man from Orion Township missed a stop sign and drove his Jeep Cherokee into the Byers' Lake Orion family kitchen.

"As you can see, it hit the curb, see the tree is missing He kept going, went through our kitchen," Christine Byers said.

Her stepdaughter had been studying in the kitchen just moments before the crash and if she had still been there, she could have been killed or seriously injured. Fortunately, nobody inside the house was hurt.

When the Byers' went to check on the driver, the guy was gone.

"My husband and my stepdaughter went to the car to see if the person was okay and they weren't there. We don't even know how this person got out of the car," Christine said.

Oakland County sheriff deputies said he escaped through the sunroof.

K-9s were brought in and they sniffed him out, hiding in a bush about a half a mile away. He was wearing only one thing: his underwear.

Deputies said the man was highly intoxicated but refused to take a breath test.

"If anyone else was on the road, you're putting lives at stake," James Byers said.

The man will likely be charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident. But it could have been been a lot worse.

Not only was he nearly naked, he also had a loaded semi-automatic gun in his car.

"We've been doing a lot of work on the house and the next project was the kitchen. I guess we're getting a new kitchen," James said.

The homeowner's insurance will cover the damage.

According to state records, his license has been suspended multiple times and he's got a prior drunk driving. He also did not have a permit for that gun.

Formal charges will come, when blood results come back from the lab.
