Police asking for help identifying Detroit school thief

Police are asking for help identifying a thief after a Detroit school was the target of a break in.

Officials are looking for a man who broke into the Detroit Enterprise Academy on Detroit's east side.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3.

Police don't have a clear description of him but determine from surveillance video he is an African-American man in his late 30s or early 40s.

The suspect got into the building by breaking into a window by the side door then breaking through more glass to get into the front office.

He then made his way into the principal's office, where he moved a safe around and stole a laptop, a docking station and a monitor.

"We'd definitely like to get him off the streets because we don't want him breaking into schools, and we also don't want him breaking into anybody else's house," said Captain Mark Bliss of the Detroit Police Department.

Police say the man knew his way around the building so they're looking into the possibility that he knows a student who attends the school.

Anyone who might know about the incident or recognize the man from the video should call police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP.
