Police negotiating with armed man barricaded in car on I-75 in Monroe Co

Both directions of Interstate 75 are currently closed in Monroe County due to a police situation. Authorities are attempting to negotiate with an armed man who is refusing to get out of his vehicle.

MSP Trooper Tony Qevas from the Monroe Post says the Oakland County Sheriff's Office got a call around 4 a.m. about a man making suicidal threats. Authorities didn't find the man at his house, but spotted his vehicle. They tried to pull him over to do a welfare check but the man didn't stop.

Authorities pursued the driver and learned he was livestreaming to Facebook, making threats against police officers and himself. In the video, authorities also learned he had a firearm with him in the car.

The pursuit started in Oakland County and went through Wayne all the way down to Monroe, where authorities eventually stopped the car with stop sticks. The man is still inside the car, refusing to cooperate with police.

I-75 closed in Monroe County due to police situation

Qevas says authorities are actively speaking with the man, who's believed to be a 37-year-old from Pontiac.

The safety of other drivers is in the authorities' best interest, which is why they have the freeway closed. The northbound lanes are closed at Luna Pier and southbound lanes are closed at South Otter Creek.

MSP is advising drivers use US-23 as their alternative route.

They're also telling residents in the neighborhood near I-75 and Gaynier to stay off their roofs, as they're not safe there.
