Police: Suspect shot, killed by officer on Detroit's west side

A suspect was shot and killed by a Detroit police officer on the city's West Side Monday afternoon, Chief James Craig said in a Facebook live video.
The shooting happened at Ostego and Webb streets, which is near Elmhurst Street and Livenois Avenue around 1:30.
Craig says officers saw a speeding driver and attempted to pull the driver over. The driver didn't stop, and eventually struck a pole.
The suspect got out of the car and began to run, and officers followed him for about a quarter of a mile, Chief Craig said. Officers caught up to the man at the rear of an abandoned home.
"Suspect ran into a utility pole of some sort he exited the vehicle and began to run."
"The suspect lunged in the direction of the officer who was in process of re-holstering his weapon that was out and fired one shot."
"The suspect lunged at officer what we believe is that the officer attempted to secure officers weapon."
Not confirming if that shot was intentional -- police say the suspect was shot in the stomach -- and pronounced dead on scene...
While one officer stayed in the car and tried to follow...
Chief Craig says the suspect appeared to have been struck in the lower torso, and paramedics pronounced him deceased.
Neighbors say they didn't see the chase or hear the gunshot.
The suspect's name has not yet been given.
Homicide detectives and internal affairs started their investigations. They say they don't believe the car the man was driving was stolen but it was not registered to him.
"The officer was not injured during incident." said, Chief Craig.
"One of the officers ensued on foot and foot pursuit which we estimate at about a quarter of a mile. The suspect lead our officer behind a vacant home an abandoned home into a heavily debris filled area behind."
During that scuffle, at one point, police say the officer was able to pull out his hand cuffs... but:
"We can only tell you that the suspect is a black man roughly 25 years of age."

As officers were taking the man into custody, the suspect lunged in the direction of the officers, Craig said. One of the officers' weapons was out , and the officer was in the process of re-holstering it when the suspect lunged. That officer fired one shot, striking the suspect.
Chief Craig says the suspect appeared to have been struck in the lower torso, and paramedics pronounced him deceased.
The suspect's name has not yet been given.
