Secret Santa once again drops $1,300 coin into Salvation Army kettle

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (FOX 2) - A secret Santa once again dropped a very valuable coin into a Salvation Army red kettle.

The organization says the person dropped a 1980 South African gold Krugerrand into a red kettle at the Kroger on Marter in St. Clair Shores Wednesday night. 

Since 2013, a Krugerrand has always been found in a red bucket. Salvation Army of Metro Detroit says it's always found around the same time frame and the same location, so it's believed to be the same mysterious person. 

This particular coin is estimated to be worth $1,300. The most recent coin donation brings the total count to six coins that have an estimated value of nearly $7,400. The Salvation Army plans to sell the Krugerrand to a coin dealer and that money will be used in many ways, including covering costs to help children get toys for Christmas.

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit's 2018 Red Kettle Campaign goal is $8.2 million this year. This coin's value goes a long way in helping them meet that goal.
