The NFL season gets underway Wednesday and football fans are already looking ahead to the 2027 Super Bowl, which takes place on Sunday, Feb, 14 — Valentine’s Day — and it’s also Presidents Day weekend, so most people will have Monday off.
This is the first time in NFL history that the Super Bowl is being played on Valentine’s Day, so fans will be mixing football and romance that day.
Fans push to make the day after the Super Bowl a holiday
The backstory:
There has been a push for years to have the Super Bowl permanently take place over President’s Day weekend, with Monday being a federal holiday and giving a lot of fans the day after the game off.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who last week agreed to a contract extension through the 2030 season, said during an interview with TODAY in September 2025, that a longer regular season to 18 games could allow for Super Bowl weekend to line up with Presidents Day weekend.
What they're saying:
"I think if you went to 18 weeks, regular season that would probably occur," Goodell said to TODAY hosts Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin. "It is possible somewhere in the calendar. Could happen before that just because of the calendar, the way it lays out. But I think 18 weeks would get you to that point, and I think it would be a really great move."
By the numbers:
The NFL currently plays a 17-game regular season over an 18-week schedule with each team getting a bye week. The move to 17 games from 16 started with the 2021 season.
