Teen survivor of Detroit plane crash battles to recover from critical injuries

DETROIT (WJBK) - The teen who survived a fiery plane crash in Detroit remains in the fight of his life.

In the moments after the crash on June 24, witness video shows Peyton Boaz running from the flames as the wreckage was engulfed.  According to authorities, low fuel and landing gear problems are to blame in the Cessna crash which killed the pilot Houston business owner Greg Boaz, and his wife, Julie, Peyton's step-mom. 

They were headed to Detroit to see Peyton's sister and mother, in town for a national volleyball tournament at Cobo Center.

The crash happened near Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport.  According to initial findings, the plane had problems landing before it ran out of fuel, hit two trees and a power line, and then exploded into flames. 

Weeks later, Peyton remains hospitalized in Detroit Receiving Hospital's Burn Unit. A family friend says he has been intubated and heavily sedated since the crash but doctors are slowly beginning to wake him.

He has had skin grafts, battled multiple blood clots in his legs, infection, fever, high blood pressure and low oxygen levels.
