Texas-based roller skate company moves to Detroit

A company out of Texas is making the move to the Motor City.

Its founder says the manufacturing capabilities here made it an easy decision. The Texas-based Faster Skates Company is relocating and setting up shop in the D.

Sarah Hipel is a derby girl originally from the Detroit area and the company's founder, says it just makes sense.

"Right now it is qualitative not quantitative, I can't give you an exact amount of growth it will offer, but this is moving into the realm of a different size company.

"This offers us the ability to expand across multiple segments of roller skating perhaps skate boarding. The ceiling has been lifted several floors if not completely taken off now."

Along with a new city and a new name, the business that is known worldwide for making long lasting wheels will be called Detroit Skate Company.

The city's manufacturing environment and skilled workforce made it the right fit.

"American made, accessible, affordable, high-quality boutique manufacturing Detroit is the best place in the whole world for us to do that," she said.

A partnership with TechTown Detroit proved vital. It is a non-profit that helps to connect companies with the resources to make these types of moves.

In a matter of months more jobs and possibilities will be headed to the Motor City as another sign of its resurgence.

"We are just really stoked to come back," Hipel said. "The roller skating industry for those who don't know in Detroit is really vibrant and amazing."

The Detroit Skate Company is still looking for the perfect space to make their wheels, expand their line of products and sell them.

They hope to be here by January of 2016.
